'Mezzi' Experimental Farm

It is situated near the River Po about 105 m above sea level and covers a surface area of 207 ha. About 50 ha are utilised as nurseries, 20 ha, which include natural woods, have been assigned for environmental restoration (a project financed by the Regione Piemonte), and the rest of the land is covered mostly with experimental poplar stands.

Specific cultivations are:

stool beds, on which all the poplar clones selected by the ISP and registered in the Registro Nazionale dei Cloni Forestali (RNCF) are grown for subsequent sale;

  • nurseries for the production of commercial poplars belonging to the most requested clones on the market, and of patented clones (by SAF/ENCC) recently registered in the RNCF;
  • nurseries of native species such as: Populus alba, P. nigra, Salix alba;
  • collections of poplar and willow clones from all over the world;
  • a small nursery of false acacia (locust tree) and oak to be utilised for environmental restoration.

The soil is basically alluvial, sandy or sandy-loamy, situated on a mainly gravel substratum. The areas used for the cultivation of nurseries and poplar stands can be irrigated easily. Irrigation is carried out by sprinklers with water drawn from a water-bearing stratum about 15 m deep and, at times, from canals.
The farm is equipped with sheds, arcades and refrigerators to conserve propagation material as well as water tanks where the material is kept before planting.
